Learners Skill Session or Induction
Step 2
So you've completed our Come & Try Session...(or you bypassed the Come & Try session because you've played pickleball socially before (under 10 games) however you're not a member of any other pickleball clubs, or you want an assessment of your skill level before booking into games, or you need a refresher of the basics and learn about our club.)
Whatever the reason .. we look forward to seeing you at our "Learners Skills Session"!
So what is a “Learners Skills Session”?
If you have just completed a Come & Try session, then it's the next step of your journey with our club.
At our Learner Skills Sessions you will be guided by an instructor to learn and practice the basics of pickleball. This will include but not limited to, serving, returns, court layout, soft play, strong play, scoring, player etiquette and club rules etc. Once you can confidently accomplish the basics, we chat with you about which sessions best suit your skill level.
If you have played a little bit of pickleball socially, (but not in a club and under say 10 games), or you're a bit rusty or you would like an assessment of your skill level, we can do that at a Learners Skills session. We cover all the above and due to you having some experience playing, we can move through our check list quickly. This will assist you in determining where your skill level is at and for which games you feel confident to book into.
Players comment:- "Having the support of a member of the club to guide me through my play and club rules, has given me so much more confidence in moving forward!"
INDUCTION
This session is for people who have played 10+ games and are confident in their pickleball skills and their overall game, please go to our "Visiting & Existing Players" page and follow the steps.

![]() To book into a Learners Skills Session, you need to use Spond. If you didn't download it for the Come & Try session, you will need to download it now.
If you and your partner would like to attend a Learners Skills Session, you will need to set up two SEPARATE accounts with separate emails in Spond. If there is the availability at the session time you want, then you can each book into sessions on the same day and time. To avoid disappointment, remember to BOOK EARLY as spots get taken fast. We use the app SPOND for booking into this and all sessions. 1. CLICK HERE to be taken to our Spond group. 2. Accept the Spond invitation (Our group code is KDGNN) 3. Put in your details and click you are a Member and not a Guardian (this is only for parents who are joining their children). Please ensure you include your email and contact phone number. 4. Then enter YES in the following boxes:- "Never Played Pickleball" or "Played under 10 Games" and enter details in other boxes as needed. 5. If you are a current member of Pickleball Victoria, then put your membership number in the box National ID No. If you are a member of Pickleball Victoria and you're not sure what your ID number is, CLICK HERE to search. 6. Register your credit card (or Apple Pay) with Spond to pay for this and future session fees, which are only $8 per game. 7. Once you see the FRONT screen on Spond, you will see some events appear .. DO NOT click on ANY.. instead click on the the picture in the BOTTOM menu of the screen - SECOND from the right (it will look like two heads or group of people with arrows - it may be called GROUPS) when you click on this small picture at the bottom, it should show you TORQUAY PICKLEBALL CLUB logo on the screen ... then you click on our LOGO! Then the screen will show you MORE events. These are all the events on offer to you from our club at Torquay Pickleball. Although the previous "HOME" screen looks similar, it may not have all the same events, so try to get into the habit of ALWAYS clicking on the bottom "group/people" button and then our logo, and then check THOSE events and BOOK in and ACCEPT those events. Unfortunately, if you do not do the above and you click on an event on your HOME screen on Spond, you may miss out on games. It's a sad app fault on Spond's part and there is nothing we can do about it, but at least we know how to get around it! 8.Now you are in Torquay Clubs Events page, look for the event called "LEARNERS SKILLS” .. find one that has the date and time you can come, then once the event is OPEN (see * below) scroll down the screen a bit in that event and you will see an ATTEND button .. click on that and you will be booked in to attend. (this event is $8-00 for approx 1.5hours) 9. Before playing at our club, and if you are not a member of Pickleball Victoria and if you have not already done so at the Come & Try session, we will require you to sign a "Risk Waiver" prior to playing. 10. We also ask if you can join the free app DUPR .. click here to see why? * Please note:- Games will become available (open) on Spond to book approx. 3 days before the actual date of the game. Due to games filling up quickly, book asap to avoid disappointment. Once a game is “full” (reached its max players) you then go on a “waiting list” just in case someone cancels. Please note, we may add more sessions from time to time for Come & Try and Learners Skills, or we may increase numbers at some games.. so again, keep an eye on the app. Please note that spaces are limited and walk ups are not accepted. (Our Learners Skills session are run by Volunteers from our Club who are taking time out of their day to help you begin your journey, so if you are unable to attend, after booking in on Spond then PLEASE LEAVE A PRIVATE MESSAGE ASAP ON SPOND for Stephen and please let him know you are unable to attend. Thank you 9. Where:- All games are played at the Wurdi Baierr Stadium: Wadawurrung Way, Torquay, Victoria 3228 10. Code of Conduct:- It is important for you to please read and adhere to our Code of Conduct Click HERE Thank you 11. Footwear:-Please ensure you wear appropriate sports shoes, as you will be playing on a basketball stadium floor. 12. As you practice playing pickleball your skill level will usually improve and if you notice you're not being as challenged and you would like to progress more, then speak to an instructor or coach about moving up to higher ranking games.
After you've been playing for a while and if you feel you need to polish up on your strategy, soft shots, dinks, serving etc. then maybe book into one of our Sharpen Your Skills sessions. They are great value and will help you improve your skills and overall game. (look for them on Spond - they are held once a month) Click here to go to our Pathway and Player Level Descriptions and Play Sessions Times At Torquay Pickleball Club our aim is to have fun, play safe and enjoy each game you play! PLEASE REMEMBER - we're not playing for sheep stations and these games are not competition, so friendly SAFE games and having FUN is the aim and sharing tips so we can all improve our game :-) Duty Of Care - If a host, instructor or coach notices you're play is unnecessarily heavy handed, especially toward less skilled players, then they may have a chat with you.
